The Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE) is an innovation hub where ideas, people, resources, and technology meet and create the future. The CFE aims to inspire and transform the Michigan community into entrepreneurial thinkers and doers. The CFE provides active learning experiences to all students and faculty at the University of Michigan through classes and programs that are designed to teach the skills needed to successfully translate high-potential projects and ideas into the real world. In learning these skills, individuals become better prepared to identify and act on opportunities to solve problems in any organization, or entrepreneurial endeavor.
The Marketing and Communications Manager will be responsible for strategically developing and leading the CFE’s marketing and communication efforts. The CFE is seeking a high-energy, self-starting, and experienced individual to further position the Center as a globally-recognized leader in entrepreneurship education.
The Marketing and Communications Manager will work with the CFE Executive Staff team to develop and execute the Center’s marketing and communications strategy and materials that tell compelling stories of our students, faculty, educational programs, and technology acceleration programs. The person in this position will be responsible for maximizing the impact of press opportunities cultivated by CFE programs and speakers; broadening the strategic impact of the CFE; and coordinating the CFE’s marketing and communications operations with the broader CFE team and relevant offices in the College of Engineering and the University.
The CFE seeks a leader who is effective utilizing traditional communication channels and is capable of implementing new mediums to reach a target audience. The ideal candidate will understand how to leverage text, graphics, video, and audio to create strong connections with both internal and external audiences. The primary audiences of the CFE include students and faculty being recruited into our programs, the University community and leadership, peer academic institutions, external CFE partners (alumni and industry), and other organizations with interest in high-impact entrepreneurship education. The person in this position must have experience in crafting stories with high visibility and developing overarching themes that deeply resonate with key stakeholders and audiences. The successful candidate will understand how to conduct customer discovery to identify niche audience segments and define associated value propositions to implement a strategic marketing plan with compelling elements to maximize impact.
Create, implement and oversee CFE-wide marketing and communications efforts to recruit students and researchers, demonstrate the value of CFE to the University community and leadership, engage our external network, and position the CFE as a global leader in entrepreneurship education.
Work with CFE program managers to develop and execute detailed marketing plans for CFE programs and events.
Prepare online, print, social media, on campus, and email marketing campaigns.
Coordinate the development of original content for blogs, newsletters, press releases, web stories, marketing collateral, and other digital and print materials.
Build and maintain relationships with relevant campus, local, and national media outlets, strategic partners, and peer institutions: particularly the CoE Communications and Marketing Department.
Strategically identify and pitch impactful stories to reporters on CFE programs, students, and startups.
Identify opportunities for CFE staff and faculty to engage in thought leadership activities, including op-eds, blogs, conferences, keynotes, etc.
Oversee CFE web and social media presence, including developing brand voice, maintaining a content calendar across multiple platforms, moderating responses, leveraging analytics to improve post performance, and encouraging positive engagement with brand.
Track all marketing data and create detailed written reports and verbal presentations to bring to CFE executive staff.
Use traditional and digital media to highlight and document the success of CFE students, faculty, staff, and researchers in conjunction with the larger CFE marketing strategy.
Maintain awareness of and drive participation in CFE academic and co-curricular programs.
Continually build a database of relevant metrics, facts and figures to use in promotional materials.
Manage the CFE Marketing and Communications team and operations.
Establish relationships with freelancers to support projects related to graphic design, video, photography, and web development.
Identify and monitor key marketing & communications performance metrics.
Bachelor's degree in communication, education, marketing, writing, or related field with 4 or more years of relevant experience.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including copywriting, presenting, and experience drafting original content for blogs, newsletters, press releases, web stories, marketing collateral, and other digital and print platforms.
Demonstrated experience in developing and executing marketing strategies, including identifying, monitoring, and reporting on key metrics of success.
Demonstrated success in managing multiple social media channels, including developing a brand voice and encouraging positive engagement.
Experience using analytics to monitor trends in content marketing and improve performance.
Ability to lead projects from start to finish with minimal supervision.
Experience managing marketing and communications projects from ideation to delivery as well as demonstrated attention to detail and a strong ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
Experience in developing, tracking, and analyzing appropriate data to drive strategic communication decisions.
Experience in efficiently managing multiple, diverse projects simultaneously and creating and directing innovative work under tight deadlines.
The ability to work effectively with other creative professionals, including graphic designers, photographers, videographers, and web developers.
Excellent attention to detail.
Strong work ethic and pride in what you do and how you do it.
Willingness to be flexible, adaptable and open in a fast-paced environment.
High proficiency in Microsoft office, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. Expertise in Keynote preferred.
High proficiency in Google Suite, including Slides, Docs, and Sheets.
Experience working with graphic design technologies and software (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop).
Familiarity with WordPress website maintenance.
Experience working with local and national media outlets.
Experience working with entrepreneurship support organizations, startup companies, or venture capital firms.
