The Director, Research & Business Development Strategic Marketing develops, oversees, and executes strategic communications and marketing projects for the University of Maryland Ventures Program (UMV) and the Center for Maryland Advanced Ventures (CMAV) initiative. These projects cover a variety of programs including UMB's Office of Technology Transfer (OTT), the University of Maryland BioPark, the Maryland Momentum Fund and initiatives including the GRID, Industry Alliances and the Baltimore Fund. This position will manage a wide range of marketing and communication processes and projects to promote the technology and business development opportunities offered by these efforts including faculty expertise, startup company success and economic development accomplishments. The Director is responsible for developing content and maintaining websites of UM Ventures, Anchor Ventures, UM BioPark and Office of Technology Transfer and directing the development of marketing materials, sponsorship and events that build the profile of these initiatives. This position will interact with high level business professionals, faculty inventors, UMB's licensing team, directors of the initiatives under UM Ventures/CMAV, and a variety of contractors supporting design, public relations and scientific/technical writing.
This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Operations, Office of Research and Development. The position is expected to provide leadership and expertise in building communication and marketing strategies to promote the work and impact of UMV and CMAV projects and programs.

Designs and implements communication and marketing strategies and projects for University of Maryland (UM) Ventures and Center of Maryland Advance Ventures (CMAV) to its stakeholders including faculty and academic units, industry, funding entities, investors, regional economic development partners, and the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB)and University System of Maryland (USM) community.
Tracks a wide variety of stories generated from research and business development programs to build into a variety of communications.
Manages a variety of channels including web, materials, marketing projects, and social media with a goal of elevating the visibility and building positive awareness of the UM Ventures programs' success stories, faculty inventors, and startup companies.
Responsible for overseeing the design of websites, social media presence, and web pages for specific programs.
Plans and manages the details and logistics of events for UM Ventures initiative programs including high level events for investors, regional technology leaders, and University's leadership and business partners.
Creates and prepares special communication for a variety of events including technology meetings, outreach, seminars, presentations, and trade shows.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education : Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Experience : Nine (9) years of experience in communications, public relations, and strategic marketing program planning and administration.
Supervisory Experience: Three (3) years of direct management or leadership.

Creative marketing, project management, organizational, and public relation skills are critical. Must have very strong people skills to manage alliances at all levels.
Ability to operate under pressure and meet tight deadlines using effective project management skills. Ability to think conceptually and knowledgeable about the current industry best practices for internet-based marketing and social media.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to translate complex information in materials for lay audiences.
Work collaboratively and effectively as a team member.
