Advertised Summary Job Description: Reporting to the Dean of the Law School and working closely with the Chief of Staff, the Executive Director is the primary strategist for developing, articulating, and messaging the Columbia Law School brand and is responsible for creating and managing a comprehensive integrated communications - plan across various print, digital, and social media - that highlights and promotes the strengths and uniqueness of the Law School to its various internal and external audiences. The Executive Director manages a department responsible for public affairs and media relations, editorial communications and marketing, and website content and front-end development. Responsibilities: 1.Leads a department that supports the strategic goals of the School and its constituent units. Manages a team, including director-level positions in media relations, marketing and communications, and digital communications, and supports the growth and development of its members. Develops goals and metrics for team success and evaluates staff and department success against established metrics. 2.Articulates a cohesive, engaging, and energetic brand for the Law School, which-digitally, aesthetically, and editorially-conveys the strength and vitality of our institution and its faculty, students, and alumni. 3.Works with key Law School administrative units, especially Development and Alumni Relations, Admissions, and Graduate Legal Studies, to develop a wide range of materials and tools that support their specialized goals while at the same time presenting a consistent message about the School. Define scope and sequence on key projects and utilize project planning and management best practices. 4.Oversees external public and media relations programs. Develops story pitches that position the Law School, Dean, and faculty as leaders in the legal academy. Communicates media strategies, identifies opportunities for the Dean and individual faculty members, and actively keeps abreast of faculty research of potential news interest. 5.Employs the latest digital communications tools, including developing and implementing a comprehensive and integrated social media strategy, as well as using video and other multi-media to enhance brand recognition and reputation. 6.Coordinates communication with internal audiences, including providing support to the Dean in developing remarks and presentations to key stakeholders (both internal and external), developing a strategic communications plan for the Dean to communicate with faculty, students, and staff, and streamlining the marketing of internal events. 7.Oversees content development and front-end web functions for the Law School website, including providing guidance on story development and placement, web design and user experience, and information architecture. 8.Coordinates and leads communications strategy across Law School administrative units, research centers, student groups, and other internal units. 9.Maintains proactive relationship with Columbia University's Public Relations staff and coordinates shared projects. General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required. Must have at least 9 years of relevant experience, which includes at least 7 years of marketing experience, preferably in higher education. Advanced degree highly desirable. Must have demonstrated strong strategic planning skills as well as experience successfully managing large and complex projects with multiple stakeholders. Superior communications, writing, and interpersonal skills. Proven experience leading a high-functioning team, including the ability to hire, manage, and motivate staff, and lead in a team environment. Knowledge of current technology and application of ever-changing digital and social media communications strategies.
