Advertised Summary Job Description: Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Outreach, the incumbent plays a critical role in developing and implementing marketing, communication, and outreach campaigns for Miller Theatre at Columbia University, one of New York City's most acclaimed performing arts venues. Creates and produces email communications, press releases, concert programs, and related copy for advertising, brochures, and other communications. Responsible for the development and implementation of outreach campaigns, and formulating strategies for campus and neighborhood engagement. Manages the website and serves as project manager for major updates. Oversees press and box office coverage, in rotation with lead staff. Other related duties as assigned, including frequent evening and weekend hours.
MANAGEMENT - In conjunction with the Director, formulates and implements the season marketing plan, including preparation and oversight of the master schedule of all department efforts - Creates and produces email communications, including newsletters, press coverage updates, special promotions, survey requests, and fundraising appeals; writes, edits, and proofreads content; designs layouts, edits photos, researches and recommends vendors, and manages database of recipients - Manages production of concert programs, including design and printing; writes original content; compiles and edits artist and composer biographies, program notes, images, and other needed materials; coordinates with external printers and oversees schedule of distribution - Responsible for monthly, series, and event press releases, including research, compiling and editing content, writing original copy, and overseeing the schedule of distribution - Responsible for development and implementation of outreach campaigns; formulates strategies for campus and neighborhood engagement, with a particular focus on faculty and student groups - Oversees neighborhood outreach campaigns and volunteer engagement, especially in conjunction with Morningside Lights and other community-oriented programming - Greets and manages media at events, creates press kits, and responds to press photo inquiries - Manages and updates the Theatre's website, and serves as liaison with external vendors and Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT); serves as project manager for major updates and redesigns - Researches and secures permissions for photography and other images; maintains performer, composer, and other image files - Maintains clipping files and archive, including distribution
SUPERVISION RECEIVED OR EXERCISED: Reports to the Director of Marketing and Outreach. Supervises part-time student employees. RESPONSIBILITY FOR BUDGET/ASSETS: Oversees application of budget resources within annual marketing budget outline. Oversees box office lock-up and security procedures, including final lock-up for daily operations and performances as assigned.
General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or its equivalent required. A minimum of two years related professional experience is required.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Demonstrated capacity to strategically formulate and successfully execute marketing campaigns is required. Superior written and verbal communication skills are required, as is the ability to interact with a highly diverse group of constituents within and outside the University and performing arts community. Must be detail-oriented and highly organized, and able to handle confidential information with excellent judgment and discretion. A high level of energy, initiative, and creativity is essential. Strong working knowledge of software and platforms used to develop, execute, and assess marketing campaigns and materials (Excel, CRM systems, email marketing software, Adobe Creative Suite, OvationTix or other box office platform, digital advertising platforms such as Facebook and Google AdWords, etc). Ability to work nights and weekends is a must.
Preferred Qualifications: Marketing experience in the performing arts and classical music experience are strongly preferred.
