Arts Everywhere is a campus-wide arts initiative supported by the Office of the Chancellor at UNC-Chapel Hill. Established in 2016, Arts Everywhere collaborates with diverse partners to embed the arts into daily life at Carolina through creative and cutting-edge programs that promote artistic expression, live arts experiences and learning through the arts. The initiative’s vision reflects the potential impact of the arts at a leading, global, public research university: a global force for public good, the arts at Carolina generate new knowledge, develop citizen leaders, address complex challenges, and catalyze economic development. Through collaborative programming, strategic communication, advocacy, coordinated fundraising, and other efforts, the initiative makes creativity and artistic expression a fundamental part of the Carolina experience and education.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Arts Everywhere, the Director of Communications & Marketing will play a critical role in the initiative’s efforts to elevate the arts at UNC. S/he is responsible for managing the initiative’s strategic communications, including messaging and branding, for the following audiences: campus leaders and partners, students, faculty, staff, media, and community members. The position will develop and implement a creative marketing and communications plan for the initiative as a whole with targeted efforts for specific programs/projects. S/he will manage traditional written and oral communication channels (e.g. press releases, interviews, public talks) as well as digital platforms, including content for the initiative’s website and app (under development), and social media. To ensure the initiative’s messages are communicated effectively and widely, the Director will cultivate relationships with campus arts leaders, the Office of University Communications, as well as media contacts. To support her/his work and the initiative’s marketing and outreach efforts, the Director will engage a team of students, which currently includes a graduate assistant from the School of Media and Journalism, a student social media coordinator, and Carolina Arts Ambassadors.
The successful candidate will have: Strong writing, editing, analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills. Clear understanding of and experience applying knowledge management and communications concepts, tools, and approaches for both internal and external audiences. Demonstrated ability to create persuasive and clear communications in all forms, traditional and electronic, and with varying audiences. Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills. Demonstrated skills in managing small and large projects with multiple internal and external partners, as well as experience in supervising students or volunteers. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with a variety of individuals including university leadership, faculty, staff, students, leaders, and external stakeholders, as well as maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, professional staff, and artists. Ability to prioritize, focus and achieve results in a fast paced and complex university environment.
Preference will be given to a candidate with: • 7-14 years of combined communications, public relations, and marketing experience • Experience in the arts – particularly in a changing regional, national, and international higher education environment – or in non-profit organizations, government or public service
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
