Milwaukee Montessori School (MMS) is an independent, co-educational day school enrolling more than 400 students from toddler age through the eighth grade. Founded in 1961, MMS is recognized for its outstanding academic program that combines and increases the depth of the traditional Montessori curriculum with an extensive range of academic, artistic, and athletic lessons taught by faculty who are professionals in their fields.
Milwaukee Montessori School seeks a Director of Communications and Marketing¸ who will report to the Director of Institutional Advancement and will advance the following institutional priorities:
Coordinate and implement all strategic communications to consistently and clearly articulate Milwaukee Montessori School’s mission to its constituents including current and prospective families, donors, alumni, and the community at large.
Develop and execute plans that enhance the visibility and public perception of the School as a transformative choice in education for Milwaukee area families.
Coordinate and oversee marketing and communication activities that support the Admission, Marketing, and Development objectives of the School.
This job is 80% communication and marketing, and 20% graphic design.
Specific responsibilities to advance these priorities include the following:
Manage, contribute, and maintain all content for the School website, including but not limited to writing content, creating graphics, creating payment and sign-up forms, and interfacing with the website’s content management system vendor and payment gateway vendor.
Write, produce, and distribute digital media including the Weekly Broadcast to the current parent body and the MMS blog. Develop and maintain relationships with school faculty to facilitate the creation of written content about classroom life via regular visits to classrooms, interviews with students, and by attending weekly faculty meetings.
Maintain common editorial and graphic standards across school publications for branding reputation and integrity.
Manage media relationships, including writing press releases and cultivating relationships with the local media. Oversee and regularly update the School’s listing on review websites.
Collaborate with administration and faculty to develop and direct all integrated social media efforts for the School’s social media pages, including taking photos or obtaining photos from staff and parents, and writing content.
Work with the Admissions Office on admissions-driven electronic/print materials including advertisements, marketing materials, online forms, and community outreach.
Collaborate with the Development Office on development-related electronic/print materials including the Annual Report, Annual Fund card, posters, event invitations and programs, case statements, and flyers.
Review, design, and produce all school digital/print advertisements, printed collateral, publications, and event materials including the Toddler, Summer, and Program Overview Brochures, Family and Faculty Handbook, event programs, posters, and flyers.
Manage School’s relationships with the outside website vendor, graphic designers, and printing firms, as well as in-house photographer and videographer.
Write, place, and manage employment advertisements for all open positions. Occasionally responsible for interviewing prospective candidates and providing input into the hiring process.
Manage and plan departmental budget including all marketing and advertising expenses. Prepare regular reports analyzing the School’s marketing and communication engagement efforts (website, social, email, etc.). Determine the ROI and adjust communication strategy and efforts as needed.
Advance communication and outreach programs with existing families by planning, organizing, and hosting the annual Grandparents’, Fathers’, and Mothers’ school visitation events.
Act as a member of the Administrative staff by attending, and sometimes assisting in the planning and coordination of, all school events, including events hosted by the Parent Association.
Act as a member of the School’s crisis team and assist in all emergency and drill situations.
Develop, disseminate, and analyze surveys to alumni, alumni parents, and families for research and marketing purposes.
Research and stay in-tune with updates and trends for marketing and advertising purposes, including in-bound marketing, retargeting, and social media strategies.
Attend independent school seminars on communication and marketing.
Successful candidates will have communications and marketing experience, covering areas such as constituent communications, newsletter development, marketing communications, website content management, and budget management. Additionally, successful candidates will have the following qualifications and skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Advertising, or a related field.
Minimum of two years of experience in communications, public relations, or marketing, preferably in an independent school environment.
Self-starter, entrepreneurial, and able to work independently. Must enjoy creating and implementing projects.
Exceptional writing and editorial skills, strong verbal skills, and an eye for graphic design.
Ability to create written and visual content, as well as identify and generate creative story ideas.
Skilled in branding techniques.
Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate widely with various constituencies throughout the School’s community.
Experience with (and/or willingness to learn) website management using our content management system; HTML skills a plus.
Experience in graphic design and proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat.
